What our data and candidate feedback reveal about SQE1 success

That stat reflects a self-selected, highly engaged subset of candidates. But it makes the point: realistic mock practice is the single biggest predictor of SQE1 success, more than any other variable in our data.

Recent candidate surveys also show:

  • 87% said the mock tests were effective preparation
  • 84% said the format, difficulty and style closely reflected the real exam
  • 83% said they would recommend QLTS to others

SQE - Law Society
Quotes

The reputation of QLTS among classmates and other people who have taken similar exams is very strong. The SQE itself is based on the QLTS exam in great detail. As a result, QLTS's materials just seem naturally to be a very good fit for me. I felt very well prepared for the exam.

Common Questions and Answers

Why should I take a preparation course for the SQE?

The SQE is the only route to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales, and the syllabus is wide-ranging. Candidates have a maximum of three attempts within six years of their first SQE assessment. Most candidates who pass first time have used a structured preparation programme rather than self-studying.

Can I try a mock test for free before I sign up?

Yes. Use the free FLK1 and FLK2 mock links on this page to access a sample at no cost. No payment details required.

Can I buy the mock tests on their own without a full course?

Not as a standalone first-time purchase — the mocks work best alongside the full study library, AI feedback and tutor support that come with the course. We do offer a dedicated mocks-only Retake Mock Programme for candidates who have previously sat SQE1 and not passed — see the retakers page for details.

What does QLTS have to do with SQE?

QLTS was the previous route for foreign-qualified lawyers to qualify in England and Wales. The SQE replaced QLTS in late 2021 as the single route to qualify for all candidates. The SQE shares many design principles with the QLTS — particularly its emphasis on application under exam conditions and its Pearson VUE-style format. QLTS School prepared candidates for the QLTS for over a decade, and that expertise transferred directly into our SQE preparation.

Do I need to buy any extra materials to prepare for the SQE?

No. Our courses cover the full SQE1 and SQE2 syllabus and include all the materials, mocks and feedback you need for preparation.

Can I pay for the SQE course in my local currency?

Yes. Change the currency before the checkout page. We currently accept GBP, USD, EUR, ARS, AUD, BRL, CAD, CNY, HKD, INR, JPY, NZD, RUB, SGD, TRY and ZAR.

How long is my course access valid?

Course access covers two consecutive SQE1 sittings (or four consecutive SQE2 sittings, depending on your course) administered by Kaplan from the date you register for the course, or until you pass — whichever is sooner. Extended access options are available.

Can I sign up at any time?

Yes. We publish updates to course materials whenever there are changes to the law or the SQE syllabus, so candidates who sign up between sittings stay current.

Do I need to register for the SQE with Kaplan before signing up?

No. You do not need to book the SQE or meet any other prerequisites to start preparation with us. You will need to pass SQE1 before you can register for SQE2, unless you are exempt from SQE1.

What is the most common reason candidates fail the SQE?

The most common pattern we see is candidates underestimating the exam itself — the time pressure, the question style and the volume. Many candidates who fail have studied hard but spent too little time on realistic, timed mock practice. That is the gap our mock-driven preparation is designed to close.
