SQE1 Mock Tests – Your Key to Success in the Exam

If you’ve landed on this page, you’re likely preparing for the SQE1 exam and are in search of mock tests due to a lack of confidence from studying with another provider, whether you are a future trainee sponsored by a law firm or not, or from self-studying without any provider, realising that your preparation is lacking. If so, you’re not alone.

In this article, we will explain why it is essential that you take SQE1 mock tests as part of your preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and your journey to qualify as a solicitor of England and Wales.

The Format of the SQE1 Assessment

Stage 1 of the (SQE) is the first of two exams you will need to pass in order to become a solicitor. SQE1 focuses on testing Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK) through two assessments.

This exam tests your knowledge of the law and how you would apply it in real-life situations as a solicitor. Ethics and Professional Conduct will be examined pervasively across the two assessments.

FLK1 and FLK2 integrate substantive and procedural law, along with testing of ethical judgment.

FLK1 covers:

  • Business Law and Practice
  • Constitutional and Administrative Law
  • Contract
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Legal Services
  • The Legal System of England and Wales
  • Tort

FLK2 covers:

  • Criminal Law
  • Criminal Litigation
  • Land Law
  • Property Practice
  • Solicitors Accounts
  • Trusts
  • Wills and the Administration of Estates

The two FLK assessments are closed book, and use computer-based, objective testing, employing single best answer questions. Each question includes a scenario, with five possible answers where only one is the best answer. Each FLK includes 180 multiple choice questions (MCQs) and is divided into two sessions of morning and afternoon of 2 hours and 33 minutes each. In total, the SQE1 exam includes 360 questions and lasts about 10 hours.

Application of the Law through SQE1 Mock Tests

Reading law textbooks, attending live lectures, watching videos, or studying with a group of friends or students are all common ways to prepare for the SQE assessments. However, one element that you should add to your study programme is attempting to pass SQE1 mock tests.

While you can memorise every legislation and case law in the textbooks, in order to pass the SQE1 exam, the SRA expects you to apply your knowledge to a given context and identify the best advice you should give your client or the course of action you should take as a solicitor in practice.

Answering practice MCQs and taking SQE1 mock tests in a similar format to SQE1 is the best way to familiarise yourself with what you will be expected to demonstrate in the formal assessment.

Otherwise, how can you be certain that you are adequately prepared for a test that you have never experienced before?

While it is not possible to predict precisely what will appear in the exam, practising SQE1 mock tests similar in format, style, and structure to those administered formally, is your best method of study, and will increase your chances of success.

Attempting SQE1 practice MCQs will also help you identify your areas of weakness so you can work to improve them prior to sitting the exam.

Our recommendation is that candidates will complete the 3o mock tests in the last two weeks before the examination.

Sponsored Candidates

A growing trend we’ve noticed is that future trainees sponsored by law firms sign up for our SQE1 preparation course, seeking access to mock tests to improve their chances of passing and avoid contract cancellation due to failure on their first attempt.

Many candidates, constrained by their firms’ selection of a particular provider, come to us for mock tests in the weeks or months leading up to the exam when they realize their chosen provider lacks sufficient mock tests.

While many law firms have their future trainees prepare with another provider to practice and develop legal skills, our course complements these offerings by emphasising rigorous mock test practice to ensure first-time success in SQE1.

SQE1: Question of the Week

Every week, QLTS School will release a video with one SQE1 multiple choice question. The question will be presented by one of our tutors, who will analyse it and provide detailed feedback on how the correct answer was achieved, and the legal reasoning behind it. You can access the Question of Week on your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

The videos will be available on our SQE Video Channel, and if you subscribe, you will be able to get notifications any time we release a new video.

More questions are available in our 30 SQE1 mock tests which we offer in our SQE preparation courses.
